Description

A counterpart to my 5th gen Picture, if you can't tell, this is going to be a recurring series.

5th Gen. [link]

A group shot of all fourth gen Pokemon, at least the ones I could fit in, I almost made it to all of them! But alas fate would not allow it and I ran out of room, the ones that made it in are as follows:

Turtwig, Grotle, Torterra, Monferno, Prinplup, Starly, Bidoof, Bibarel, Leaf Burmy, Trash Wormadam, Stunky, Shinx, Hippopotas, Hippowdon, Bonsly, Burmy, Wormadam, Combee, Vespiquen, Carnivine, Cherubi, Cherrim, Kricketot, Kricketune, Mime Jr., Snover, Abomisnow, Chingling, Happiny, Lopunny, Buneary, Togekiss, Drapion, Rampardos, Lickilicky, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Arceus, Shaymin, Cresselia, Regigigas, Uxie, Azelf, Heatran, Blue Gastrodon, Pink Shellos, Oven Rotom, Washing Machine Rotom, Fridge Rotom, Lawnmower Rotom, Electivire, Magmortar, Rhyperior, Magnezone, Probopass, Spiritomb, Bastiodon, Yanmega, Garchomp, Buizel, Tangrowth, Mamoswine, Manaphy, Drifloon, Drifblim, Bronzong, Lucario, Pachirisu, Mantyke, Porygon-Z, Gallade, Croagunk, Leafeon, Bronzor, Chatot, and Munchlax.

The one on here I like the most would be probably Dialga or Palkia, possibly the fridge Rotom. But I like Carnivine trying to eat Comby.

Not as visually pleasing as the fifth gen pic, the colors are very hard to look at for me personally, but that's just me.

Now on to the personal jazz.

For me 4th gen is like a Gyarados, that was given to us as a level 1 Magikarp. By that I mean at it's initial release my reaction was mixed to negative on essentially all of it, cared little for essentially every fourth gen Pokemon, as most people had a distaste for the legendaries for a reason I do not know and claimed there were "too many", didn't like the landscape/region, and just generally found it to be lacking, only things I loved where the soundtrack and the underground, I think I went underground with more people than I ever traded or battled.

In a nutshell I was left generally displeased with 4th gen and it left a sour taste in my mouth for months to come, as many people I have noticed felt the same. For some reason 4th gen seems to have been generally regarded as the lowpoint of Pokemon, and I have a few theories on why.

1. Hype. Before the release of the games I would literally check online from different sources daily to see if any news was released. I recall many important days and leadings, like when everyone thought the party Shellos sprite was a hint at a pre-evo to Lapras. Needless to say I was as excited as can be and my mind rushed a mile a minute each day so excited and happy for the new games and new Pokemon to arrive, in the later half of the wait to the Japanese release more and more Pokemon were leaked, all pretty decent to me no problems though most leaving little impression on me. When the game finally came out I knew mostly everything about it and that personally might have contributed to me destroying the adventure and experience (fun) the games contain. Spoiling beforehand was never possible for Pokemon, I played through the previous gens in my pre-internet days thus they all truly were fresh exciting experiences and each five minutes of play led to something new and amazing. Which is one of the things that made fifth gen so fun, because after spoiling fourth gen and reacting poorly upon release I realized the error of my ways.
Same happened with Brawl, SmashDojo daily and other sites as I'm sure many did. Though unlike many people I was very disappointed with many aspects of Brawl, highly disappointed right down to menu design which I still find uninspired and lackluster, looking like a Wii Menu, which is fine for a console but after having a dynamic layout in both 64 and Melee for your menus it just felt wrong, and many many things such as sta- OKAY this is Pokemon... Maybe one day I will talk about my gripes with SSBB. but for now Diamond and Pearl.

2. Pokemon variety and the Pre-Ev/Ev problem. Looking back upon 4th gen you might think to yourself that it felt lacking in the Pokemon department. Sure it had the cute little buggers but did it really have all that many new ones to offer? Any new evolutionary chains? Maybe I'm wording this improperly, but what I am insinuating is have you ever noticed how many Pokemon in 4th gen are either Pre-Evolutions or Evolutions to previously existing Pokemon? About one fourth, which is a LOT, made especially more noticeable by the already small number or Pokemon introduced in 4th gen, of 107. I dunno I personally love pretty much every evolution and pre-evolution introduced in 4th gen (CEPT RHYPERIOR, more like RHYFERIOR... Get it?) But let's be honest with ourselves it makes the gen feel less of it's own and more of a leech to prior regions.

3. Too little additions. This is one that gets thrown around a lot, and it's one I agree with wholeheartedly. 4th gen really did not add anything fresh to the table... Unless ya like Poffins. Aside from that, what'd it give? Don't say day and night system, I still am baffled as to why that was removed from 3rd gen.... Graphics are a given and are not counted, yeah, essentially nothing riveting and exciting. The underground as I stated earlier is an awesome feature, but even we have to be honest with ourselves is mostly comprised of RSE's secret base feature, with an added digging minigame. I dunno I'm sure you can come up with something if you think hard enough, but it's obvious in the gameplay area it really gave little, meaning it would need to really depend on it's Pokemon more which as I stated previously didn't seem to.

4. Nostalgia. Ooooh nostalgia, what a sordid feeling I have for you. Nostalgia is like religion, it's a good thing that if handled improperly can be turned into a vicious, stupid, biased little monster. (I'm gonna get a lotta hate for that ain't I?) But you know it's true, I can't think of another series than Pokemon that gets as many nostalgiafags that hate the new Pokemon solely because it ain't what they grew up with. I'm not saying that just because you don't like it I will call you a nostalgiafag, no some people really DO say that that is their reason!!!! And that's just plain stupid and pathetic and unfair! And just like a religious extremist they will never open their eyes and think for just a millisecond that HMM MAYBE IT DOES HAVE SOME PERKS. I dunno I wish people knew how to handle nostalgia properly, the point is, "I grew ups in the 90s and I miss Misty and they should make Misty the champion or something or I dunno the playable character cause that's what I grew up with" is the kind of stuff that leads to people not even giving the new games a chance.

5. Lastly one I doubt anyone really ever thinks of, and I never thought of until making this drawing. Asthetically pleasing color palette for the generations Pokemon. What the 'eff is that you ask? Well while drawing this I seemed to notice just how many Pokemon in fourth gen are blue... Because I strive to not put Pokemon of the same color next to each other in this it proved to be quite a challenge, think for a second about how many pokemon have blue as a primary color in their scheme, YEAH! A freaking ton!!! Literally it's like a fourth! It made me think that, like, possibly, psychologically people have a jumbled powerpoint on crack in their brains of a gens respective Pokemon and that can give them their general thoughts on the designs, and all the blue can MAKE YA BLUE.. Just a thought.

Point is, I didn't care for fourth gen. But I played it relentlessly of course, but I didn't care for it. Gradually as time progressed I grew to love some Pokemon from it, specifically Bronzong I recall being the one that really began to be my love, and from there I started to realize that YEAH, I am really attracted (no furry, you know what I mean) to the Pokemon that are based more on... Inorganic, things... Sigilipyh, Baltoy,Claydol, yadayada. That list grew and grew, I loved Bidoofs doofiness, Porygon-Z', the legendaries are now my favorites out of all five gens and I am obSESSED with the legendaries in fourth gen! 4th gen is what spurred my love for legendary Pokemon and the awesomeness of bringing together different cultural beliefs into one system in Pokemon. The list grew on and on until I loved each and every fourth gen!! EVERY ONE!!!! Save for one....
Oh those orange plates, that stupid face, the Magmortar rip-off hands... The body that looks almost immobile, the evolution that was completely unnecesary HNNNGH....

Though the region still bothers me heavily, that has never changed, the only areas I can truly profess love for are the route to Snowpoint and Snowpoint itself, Fuego Ironworks, Pastoria and it's surrounding routes, the awesome Old Chateu, and the beloved Spear Pillar, but not the mountain.

The music I have always loved, the characters I have grown to adore, at first the gym leaders felt bland save for a few (fell in love with Gardenia at first sight and she's still my fav gym leader), and let's be honest the inclusion of Cynthia makes 4th gen awesome alone.

I'm happy to know that 4th gen which I once reviled has now become something I truly adore and look fondly upon. Is it the best gen? Heck no!!! If I had to rate it it is either second or first place at the bottom of the list for me, with a butting of the heads with first gen. But the point is, I adore it, so so much, and it is precious to me even if it is my least favorite of the games in the series ever, and that's a testament to the power of Pokemon.

As a side I am not counting HG and SS in this description, if you care to hear my thoughts on them just leave a comment. And also as a side I should say, Platinum is my second favorite "third game".
