Metroid Fusion Tribute by BLARGEN69 Metroid Fusion Tribute by BLARGEN69
As you can see in my break I have spent a lot of time with my poor neglected tablet, I have done much traditional work but hardly anything worthy of uploading.
This is the first in a series I have wanted to make for years, essentially just a set of art pieces inspired by each Metroid game, in order of favoritism. First up, my favorite of the series; Fusion.

Metroid Fusion has always been a controversial title in terms of it's linearity, that's never bothered me though, and prefer it the game would have nowhere near the impact it has if it were open-ended like Super Metroid. I believe the main reason I love Fusion so much is because it's atmosphere is just perfect, the escalation of dread as you progress through the game is so perfect. The mission just becomes so hopeless and you actually feel it, though you get stronger throughout the game you simultaneously feel weaker and more defenseless as BSL itself seems like an all-encompassing maw. The plot twist with the Federation's secret Metroid program is awesome, the revelation that the SA-X has reproduced, I can't think of a single flaw in Fusion in my eyes. The spritework is the most gorgeous of any in the series and has so much uniqueness, no room seems to look the same even in massive sprawling themed sectors, BSL feels like a real station and you can totally expand it easily with your imagination, it's the most immersive Metroid for me even moreso than the openended freeroam type ones.

It's a classic I still play pretty much annually, and a game I will never tire of. I love Metroid Fusion to death, not just my favorite of the Metroid series but one of my most beloved games of all time.

For this piece I decided to start simple and do something pretty standard for me, but I intend to try experimenting with different techniques and art styles throughout the duration of this series. I wanted to capture the thrilling chase sequences as you are pursued by the SA-X, but I also wanted to draw my favorite sector, AQA, so I just threw the two together.

If you are curious the order of these will be as follows, up next is:
-Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
-Metroid Prime
-Metroid II: The Return of Samus
-Metroid: Zero Mission
-Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
-Super Metroid
-Metroid Prime Pinball
-Metroid: Other M
-Metroid Prime: Hunters
-Metroid

In the moment where SA-X mutates, I almost imagined that www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFD9ZE… would've been playing in the background.

Same man, I'm glad lots of people felt the same, it's incredible how immersive Fusion really was, I've never ever played another 2D sidescroller with such an engrossing world and atmosphere and one that actually can, unnerve you,

The times she freaking did would just leave you on the edge of your seat and scared out of your mind, it's so funny to me thinking that as a kid, Metroid Fusion witht he SA-X moments gave me more fear than most horror games I played then haha!

Dude thank you SO much for the compliment, it's really great to hear! Cause I just recently have decided to transition my comic books from traditional media to digital media so hearing that my tablet-pieces can be that good in the eyes of someone is very encouraging. Thank you!

Wow! Very nice! I love the clean look to this piece, The placement of all of this pieces elements (the characters and environment) are very interesting, and the anatomical proportions of the characters look really good. I think you were successful with this piece. The only thing I might suggest would be to add more darker values into the scene to make it really dramatic :la:

I am glad this was so well received by so many people, yourself included. Especially since it is the most basic I am going to get when it comes to this Metroid Tribute series. I also agree with you on the fact that it should have been darker, one of my first gripes after finishing this I had was that I thought it was a bit too bright, I definitely should have at the very least made the back corridor darker. The next one in this series is for the game that is all about dark and light however so I REALLY need to experiment with lighting for that one haha!

Man, I loved fusion as well. The feeling on those occasions when you are running away from SA-X, they just a pure adrenaline rush. Atmosphere, like you said, was great in this game. The only thing I wish they could of improved is the music. Not saying the music was bad, I am just saying it could be better. I like the music, but I just wish it would be on the Metroid prime 2:echoes scale (that game, for me, had some of the best music ever).
This is way to awesome to pass up on. AWESOME JOB.

That seems to always stick with people the most, the SA-X pursuit scenes. They are some of the most memorable moments in a game I can think of. It's great to think that though Prime came out at the same time many people I've found find Fusion has more an impact on them atmospherically. I can understand why you don't care for the music, personally I LOVE the soundtrack to Fusion, it's just so radically different, it's topped only by Return of Samus for having the most alien soundtrack in the series. I think I have to agree though with Echoes having the best soundtrack out of the series, that one certainly has some of my favorite songs ever. Like the Dark Samus theme, and Torvus Bog.

Didn't say I didn't care about Fusion's music; heck, out of the side scrolling Metroids, I think it has the best music...just wish it was more... I dunno, EXTREMELY AWESOME (as apposed to just being awesome). I have to say, Prime had the greatest impact on me, because well, IT WAS METROID GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED :D. If it wasn't for prime, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now xP

Anyways, Sanctuary fortress, Emperor Ing and Temple Grounds are my favorite music from Prime 2.
So sad how Prime 3's music was kinda a let down for me, and don't get me started on Other M's Music *-_-

Haha! I knew someone eventually would comment on that upcoming Pinball piece eventually. Personally it's going to be my favorite out of all these drawings, the composition I've got planned out is just awesome and I know a lot of people are going to love it.
MP Pinball will never fade out for me HAHA I play it every month at least once still! And I still cry thinking they never made an Echoes Pinball game.

i didn't care much for the mechanics of the game. i understand they were limited doing it on the GBA, but it seemed too limited to it's potential.

but i 100% agree that the dread level of the game was high. weak to extreme heat and cold. being chased by SA-X and ice-X. Nightmare's gravity Turbine.

but they massively overpowered the charge beam. let's use nightmare as an example. you can plow like 25 missiles into his gravity turbine to kill it, or just blast like 9 or 10 charge beams into it. and like with Neo ridley. you can nearly empty your missile reserves into him. or just blast like 24 or 25 charge shots into him. but i guess it kind of evens out with the broken amount of damage enemies do to you. especially when SA-X newb shoots you and keeps you frozen while she plows super missiles into you.

but the environments and creatures are just beautiful. like a whole new art style to the game. the music changed in style and got creepy and exciting. and i just love the music for nightmare and the spider boss... didn't care too much for the Vs. Ridley music though.

and now for the artwork. lol. i love it. you captured the style just like it is in game. it's bright but still looks dark and creepy. and the feeling of terror that samus feels while running from SA-X. she's so afraid of it, she even has to look back at it instilling more fear into her flight away from the monster, just knowing how easily it can kill her. worse for her she doesn't even know there are like 10 of them on the BSL.

Very well done :D

You find it limited? In what regard? Size? I find BSL to be the perfect size for the game, I especially love finding the secret corridors once fully upgraded that let you literally run from sector to sector completely bypassing the elevators. I can't really think of a time I found Fusion to be missing anything, it's certainly got enough environmental variety to me as well as enemies and especially bosses. It seems to have more content than most every Metroid title.
As you stated I think the charge beam's overpowered nature, which I completely agree with is fine given how freaking weak you are in that game. Don't some attacks take entire energy tanks out of you?
My favorite music track in the game is the one that plays when you return to AQA after beating Nightmare, it's so fitting, it is THE song I think of when I think about that dreary sense of hopelessness that the game provides once you are at that point.
Thanks for commenting!

i find it limited in performance. the size is massive, bigger than the zebes map by far. and a lot more enemies like you said. they just really limited samus, especially by making her incredibly weak and needing "permission" to enter areas. other than that the game is friggin fantastic and overwhelming.

but the charge beam i still feel is overpowered. and i dont think any attacks take energy from you... even the shine-spark doesn't drain energy like it is supposed to. which disappointed me because it was designed to do so and try to limit your use of it.

Haha yeah I've been taking a long break from DA and most of my social accounts frankly, just been really busy with other stuff.
I actually didn't use Photoshop or Gimp for this, nor any of my digital work, I use Paint Tool Sai, it's just the best I've found for drawing.

I've gotta know more about that program, then...wanna give me details? And also, how long does it take to master the use of for simple digitalization of traditionally-drawn art of a very simple image (like a character profile)?

Sorry for replying so late, if you have not yet researched into the program, then here ya go. I personally didn't really take any getting used to when it came to handling the program, it's fully customizable in the fact that you can make your own tools, by taking pre-existing brush styles and messing around with all of the effects/pressure sensitivities with it then saving them, or you can install other peoples.
For adapting a traditionally drawn picture it really isn't that difficult, you can either trace over it with the pens or you can use a vector layer, which is not that easy to explain but works WONDERS for tracing. I don't use it nearly enough.

I love the Fusion Suit personally, it'd have to be my third favorite suit in the series following the Phazon Suit and the Varia Suit, I think I just love it's uniqueness it's the only truly out there concept for a suit in the series.
